At the center of the mesmerizing rolling hills, resided a shepherd boy. His existence was unadulterated, simple yet virtuous. His only responsibility was to look after his flock of rams.
Their low murmuring and the murmuring of the breezes among the lone tree on the hilltop were his only co-dwellers. Day in day, looking out for his charges inculcated in him a notion of tranquil contentment.
However, there were occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would long for company. During one such occasion because of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous scheme.
Stories of wild beasts hunting here on sheep had long been circulating in the town. So, the boy chose to exploit this fear and played a joke on the villagers.
One morning he ran into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is attacking my sheep!” The scared villagers sprinted up the hills to offer assistance but saw nothing threatening.
The boy laughed at the confusion on their faces. This trick continued for a couple of more days. However, one day, a real wolf actually charge at the flock. The shepherd boy ran for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his flock. Devastated, he went back to the town only to be met with a lesson on honesty and the repercussions of false alarms.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the perils of crying wolf. Moreover, it stresses how trust once violated, is hard to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was anciently.
